Not on Northgate

Northgate

The Battalion

For longer than most can remember, Northgate has been the place for Aggies to congregate.

The district has become synonymous with A&M, developing traditions for vendors, eateries and watering holes, ranging from flashy clubs to scaled-down bars like the Dixie Chicken. But this might change, and fast.

A recent resolution unanimously passed by the College Station City Council will bring sweeping changes to Northgate, under the guise of public safety. The city plans to permanently close a portion of College Main, similar to the roadblocks students see Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The city will also create a pedestrian mall for the Northgate area, with parking restructuring as well as safety and aesthetic improvements.

This plan has been in the works for 11 years. While all of those improvements sound great, and the City Council is cooperating with Texas A&M and TxDOT for support, two important groups have been left out of the discussion, merchants and patrons of Northgate.

“No one up here is against safety, but the issue does not exist during the day,” said Robert Forrest, the owner of Army surplus store Sarge’s. “No one can argue Wal-Mart’s parking lot is safer during the day. My question is why close College Main 24/7 when we only need it closed four to five hours a night. The same money could be used, and service vehicles and other cars could use the road, but the way it is now it makes it harder for our customers and our businesses.”

This plan for will prevent passing cars from seeing these stores, a critical draw for the retail industries.Retailers rely on walk-in business that will be denied if the road is closed.  The city seems intent on creating a nightlife-focused environment that forces out retailers and even restaurants.

The city council wants to ruin what makes Northgate a unique blend of business that caters to students and nonstudents alike. And if the city continues to ignore the people it affects most, an unwanted entertainment venue will emerge. No street traffic and constant construction set to start June 2011 will be the death knell for local institutions like Sarge’s and Loupot’s. And, of course this means more bars will take their place.

“More bars brings unwanted competition with current establishments,” said Chris Scotti, head of the Northgate Merchants, an association of Northgate stakeholders.

The bars, which stand to benefit the most from these improvements, are against the plan. Retailers and merchants on Northgate are against it as well. This leaves the city with no hands to garner support and no leg to stand on.

“The council brought this plan as an all or nothing deal, so we, as a group, were compelled to oppose it outright,” Scotti said.

The head of Northgate Merchants and the businesses he represents are right to say the city’s using the council as a bully pulpit to give Northgate a makeover. The city council is only justifying its complete overhaul of Northgate with safety, which mostly applies to nighttime operations, while simultaneously trying to shut out the complaints of those who have personal and financial stakes in Northgate. Aggies need to ask the city that depends on them for everything about these plans, because clearly they will not ask us.

You obviously don't know your facts. Students have had a loud voice in this; I don't know where you were at. Have you even reviewed the TxDot plans (because your facts are clearly wrong)? Did you vote in the City of College Station elections recently (then they have no obligation to represent you)? Did you attend the multiple city council meetings where this was discussed and you could have offered your opinion (how can you say you were left you; did you want them to come to your front door?) ? I anticipate you haven't.

Thank you for continuing the tradition of stupidity here in the The Batt Opinion section. Gig'em!

Progress will always change things. The culture of northgate changes every couple of years and each generation has their own memories. Remember when there was a dirt lot? For me Northgate died with Don Ganter and when they banned drinking on the promenade. I am happy the city is focusing on an entertainment district as long as the city can find a balance between promoting the area at least trying to maintain the culture and not just market its memory.

Ok you dopes. none of you were here when the sitting council pulled this same stunt. They did a major renovation on Northgate without the vote of the people. That glorious garage has cost the city millions they still haven't recovered. Guess what. This plan is meant to pay for that mistake or model this into another AUSTIN LIKE area. Sorry, I don't want Aggieland to look anything like Austin unless you can bring the big lake with it. During the first renovation a persons business was taken via eminent domain then sold to a competitor for more money than was paid to the original owner. The original owner wasn't offered the choice to upgrade his establishment. As far as competition. You get the best price available right now. People drive in from Austin, Houston and other areas because prices are so cheap. Additional competition will put the small guy out of business and cause prices to go up. Open your eyes to the big picture. The city council doesn't want to make it nicer they want more money. And like nearly everything they do they do it without the consent of the people they are supposed to represent.

I can't express how long overdue this construction is. Also: lol window shopped for the army surplus? How exactly does their business model survive over people driving by to notice the store when they have to drive around looking for parking?

Student- So because Rick opposes these plans to renovate Northgate, he is dull? You sure do make some far-fetched assumptions based on little evidence. At least the information he is providing is based on evidence and comments from those who work on Northgate. Now go back to your computer and type up another worthless comment.

Anonymous- "Meathead"? Really? Are you 8 years old?

I'd love to see a walkway, and some benches and trees there too. I'd spend more time in the area if there were more pubs/restaurants. I've never been in the army surplus store and the bookstore is a rip off.

Northgate is so tiny that it would be a miracle if it were to somehow resemble 6th street in austin.

Northgate makes all it's money at night anyways, meathead. So it would be wise to improve the night life at Northgate. Business don't want it to be more competitive? Well more competition amongst business means better deals for students.

Loupot's is a rip off anyways, buy your books on amazon.com or half.com; they are cheap cheap cheap! And if you like getting ripped off at bookstores there are plenty more so i don't think one would be missed.

You are an idiot. You write about meaningless issues which don't affect and STUDENTS. Students are your audience. Do you think we care about a stupid army surplus going out of business when we can improve our bar district? Uh-oh, where am I going to find vietnam era jungle boots???? If anything, this is a good thing; it will help our bar district improve and become more inviting to attract more people here. I guess this is a foreign concept for you Rick, Mr. Dull, but people like to go out and walk around and drink and eat. Now go back to your computer and type up another worthless opinion.

How could this not help businesses??? People who park at the northgate garage and walk to campus will have to walk by all of those shops helping them more than hurting them along with making the area safer to foot traffic.
