The University of Texas at Austin campus is all clear after the morning's shootings. Police have identified Colton Tooley, 19, as the shooter. Tooley was a sophomore math student at UT, and lived in South Austin.
What appears to be a lone-gunman opened fired outside the campus library just after 8 a.m. The shots were fired up into the air, and no students were hit. The shooter then entered the library carrying the AK-47 and went to the sixth floor where he killed himself. No motivation or reason for why the shooter did not aim for students is known at this time.
All people on campus are encouraged to leave the campus for the day in light of the morning's events.
At 9:12 a.m., UT reported that a suspected shooter had been found dead in Perry-Castaneda Library. The university went into lockdown from the first reports about 8 a.m. when a man was seen walking into the library with the AK-47 assault rifle, after firing shots into the air outside the library, reports say.
Students on the UT's campus said the shooter was wearing a business suit and ski mask. Conflicting descriptions of the shooter had police searching to see if there were, in fact, two shooters.
Students reported to FOX News seeing the second shooter running from the library where the initial shooting took place, but police searches did not confirm the reports of a second gunman at this time. The campus was closed for several hours while police searched every room, and the search for a second shooter was eventually called off.
Everyone was told to stay away from the campus, and those on campus were to stay locked in rooms. SWAT teams were clearing rooms and evacuating students from buildings in the area.
Sophomore Megan Hodges was outside the library the same time as the gunman, and in class nearby when the shots began being fired. Students were locked in rooms and took cover while the danger persisted.
"After waiting for like an hour, a SWAT team came in and escorted us out," Hodges said. "They were waiting by the door with cocked guns in hand and made us all raise our hands in the air while they searched the building. When I finally got outside, there were more police officers, and tanks and helicopters were everywhere. It was really scary, and it really shook me up."
The library is toward the southwest corner of campus, not far from the school's largest dormitory.
"The police did a fantastic job of handling the situation," Frame said. "I would not hesitate to describe UTPD's actions today as one of their finest hours."
All classes and organized activities for today have been cancelled at UT and will resume tomorrow as normal.
