Pakistani support of US war on terror is uncertain despite democratic intentions

Aug. 18 marked the end of an era in Pakistani politics with the resignation of President Musharraf after nine years as head of state. On Oct. 12, 1999, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, chief of the army staff, ousted then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a bloodless coup and declared himself the chief executive, effectively setting up a dictatorship with power stemming from the armed forces.
