The Coppell Copperheads took an early lead and hung on to defeat the Brazos Valley Bombers 7-3 Tuesday night at the Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark.

Coppell took advantage of a critical Bomber error with two outs in the second inning and was able to put three unearned runs on the board for the Copperheads.

The Bombers rallied in the 6th, scoring three runs to close the gap to a 5-3 Coppell advantage. Next inning Copperhead designated hitter sent a solo home run over the left field wall and regained the momentum for Coppell.

"We had the momentum and we needed to go out there and make their offense put a goose egg up after we score, but that home run in the seventh gave it right back to them," said Bombers Head Coach Brent Alumbaugh.

Stranded runners plagued the Bombers offense. The Bombers left four runners stranded in scoring position in the first two innings alone.

Coppell did not experience the same problems on the bases with seven runs brought in and a total of six stolen bases. The Copperheads repeatedly went unchecked from the mound and were able to easily get to the next base despite the best efforts of catcher Kip Masuda.

"We knew they could run coming into this, but we have got to do better when they have runners on base in the future," Alumbaugh said.

Coppell pitcher Josh Thomason pitched the better part of seven innings and left the game with nine hits, two walks and three runs scored.

Bombers pitcher Brandon Godfrey was relieved after the fourth inning by pitcher Travis Dirk, who threw six strikeouts and only gave up one hit. The one hit, however, went over the left field wall and Dirk was soon replaced.
