Agassi beats Dent
NEW YORK (AP) - After surviving two rain delays, Andre Agassi defeated unseeded American Taylor Dent 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-5, at the U.S. Open, with Dent retiring because of tightness in his lower right hamstring in the fourth-round match.
With the men's draw further behind, Open officials pushed back top-seeded Kim Clijsters' quarterfinal date with Amelie Mauresmo, later suspending it for the day altogether.

Bush moves ahead with UN resolution
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration is consulting with other countries on a new Security Council resolution that would give the United Nations a leading role in building an Iraqi government and transform the military presence in Iraq to a multinational force.

IRS help centers gave incorrect information
WASHINGTON (AP) - IRS centers established to help people prepare their tax returns gave incorrect answers - or no answer at all - to 43 percent of the questions asked by Treasury Department investigators posing as taxpayers.
The investigators concluded that half a million taxpayers may have been given wrong information between July and December 2002.

Ridge: Mexican consular IDs have security problems
WASHINGTON (AP) - Businesses and cities that accept identification cards issued by Mexico to its citizens in the United States do so at their own risk because the documents are not fraud-proof, Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Wednesday.
The Mexican IDs are under review by a White House-led panel to determine if they pose a security risk and whether the cards should be accepted as proper identification.

Appeals court halts new FCC guidelines
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A federal appeals court Wednesday issued an emergency stay delaying new Federal Communications Commission rules that would allow a single company to own newspapers and broadcast outlets in the same city.
The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the community-radio advocates who sued would suffer irreparable harm if the new rules were allowed to go into effect as scheduled Thursday.

Mother accused of endangering child
HOUSTON (AP) - A 21-year old woman has been charged with four counts of endangering a child after barricading her four young children in a hot, filthy apartment for more than a day.
The children were in foster homes Tuesday. On Monday, police found the children and Children's Protective Services took them into custody, the Houston Chronicle reports in its Wednesday editions.
