Dean Bresciani, vice president for student affairs, announced that he had been asked to submit his resignation Friday.
Texas A&M President Elsa Murano and David Parrott, interim vice president for student affairs, said Bresciani deserved the praise of the University and wished him the best of luck Tuesday.
The details of the resignation have not been released, and Jason Cook, vice president for marketing and communications, said the details are between Bresciani and Murano alone.
"Murano had a meeting with Bresciani Friday afternoon, and I don't know the details of that meeting, except what's come out of the e-mails," Cook said.
Cook said Bresciani was an at-will employee because he was an adjunct professor.
"All nonfaculty positions in the A&M System are 'at will,' meaning that any nonfaculty employee may be dismissed from employment with or without cause," according to the Texas A&M University System dismissal policy.
Cook said Bresciani's future employment details are at his discretion to discuss.
Bresciani could not be reached for comment.
Bresciani has served as vice president for student affairs since 2004.
Students across campus gave praises for Bresciani, on Tuesday.
Josh Garlitos, a junior finance major, said he was sad to hear the news.
"I've only heard good things about him, so of course I'm upset he's leaving because I feel like he knew what was going on here," Garlitos said.
Jaquelyn Tullos, a junior biology major, said if Murano called for Bresciani's resignation, she should give the University an explanation.
"I would like to know her reasoning behind it," she said. "Bresciani did so much for the student activities department, so I just don't understand."
Mark Gold, student body president and senior biomedical science major, said Bresciani served the University well.
"He was a great asset to the student body at A&M," Gold said. "He definitely worked hard for the students."
Parrott, who served as associate vice president for student affairs and dean of student life, said he looks forward to his role.
"I am deeply honored to have been asked to serve as acting vice president for student affairs during this time of transition for the next school year," Parrott said. "As you know, this is a busy time for us with new student conferences under way and Fish Camp starting next month. We have much to be proud of as a University, and I'm honored to serve in this important role."
In addition, he said the University should stick together during this time.
"All of us wish Dean Bresciani all the best in his future endeavors. We recognize that while administrators may change, the Aggie Spirit that unites us all continues," Parrott said.
Because Parrott is serving in interim capacity, a permanent vice president for student affairs will be appointed.
Cook said Murano will lead the search.
"I think her goal is to fill the position as expeditiously as possibly," Cook said.
Murano stated the position will be filled permanently before the upcoming fall semester, in an e-mail distributed Tuesday.
