I'm reminded of Doug Blevins, kicking coach to such players as Adam Vinatieri. He has cerebral palsy and can barely stand, much less kick a football. But he still knows exactly what a kicker should do. Similarly, do we automatically discredit these people or say they're not serious because we don't think they practice what they preach?
She can fly commercial. And so an Al Gore. BTW - Al save the time & money and don;t run for president. In 2000 we just thought you were a clueless lifelong bureaucrat. Now we also know that you're a hypocrite as well.
And why is it that GW Bush built a "green" house at his ranch but gets no credit for doping so?

This is the dumbest comparison I've ever heard. How does a kicking coach that teaches kickers how to improve their kicking compare to this lady that is adement about changes all OUR lifestyles of living to "improve" the climate compare? They don't. The kicking coach isn't telling all of us how to kick. And anyway, I'm sure Doug used to kick the ball around before. Has laurie done anything to show that she really cares about the environment? Besides flying to Texas in a jet fuel guzzling jet to tell all the students at Texas A&M how to live?

As far as the hypocrisy goes with Ms. David, there are envrionmentally friendly methods of transportation. If she feels as strongly as she does then she should be quite willing to use one of these methods, i.e. a hybrid car or other low emission vehicle.

I am interested to know if Richard Pawlik saw Ms. David get on a private plane and fly away from Easterwood. According to this blog by Ms. Crow, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sheryl-crow/stop-global-warming-colle_b_45559.html
the two participants are travelling by biodiesel bus, not on a plane.
If Mr. Pawlik has evidence to the contrary, he should produce it. If he doesn't, he should be ashamed for lying about this episode, and the Battalion should print a retraction.

If you are what educators call a "traditional student" between the ages of 18-22, I have been an Aggie longer than you have been alive. I've paid taxes in this area for two decades and I am a native Texan. Please do not presume to tell anyone where they need to live. You may want to improve your spelling as well. You aren't making my two degrees from this university look like they are worth very much.
That being said, of course there are hypocrites of all political stripes. In my first posting, I wanted to point out that Ms. Crow was writing a blog where she stated that the method of transportation for the two "stars" of the show was a diesel bus. It's pretty obvious from Ms. Crow's writings that she rode the bus from Dallas to College Station to Baton Rouge. According to Ms. Crow's writing, she and Ms. David slept on the bus on both nights.
Now, if Mr. Pawlik saw Ms. David on the plane, he may have a news story. Then again, she may have other reasons for arriving at the campus on a plane. I don't know the backstory, but I certainly wouldn't write to a newspaper accusing anyone of being a hypocrite until I knew the circumstances behind that person's actions. Accusations are easy to make when you don't know the whole story. Mr. Pawlik may be completely correct -- I don't know. But more important, neither does he. We all need to do a little research and find out the answers before we make rash accusations toward other people.
I'm going to leave a note on Ms. Crow's blog this evening asking her about this letter. I'll report back what she has to say.
Everyone have a lovely evening.

Dear Batt Readers -
I personally know Richard Pawlick and his statement is valid. I worked with him at Easterwood Airport, I am also a private pilot and I assure you: Traveling in a private jet is no way to get around while preaching about saving the environment. These jets carry thousands of pounds of fuel on transcontinental flights. For instance, in January the executives of Dillards Department stores flew into town on a Gulfstream V, an aircraft capable of transporting 14 people about 6,500 miles. However, 3 men stepped of the plane. So, yes, this is a wasteful form on transportation if it is not maximized. However, when 'green' organizations pay aircraft to tow banners that state "Coal Is Filthy" around town, they should read up. The fuel that piston engine banner towing aircraft use has lead in it. It is called 100LL (Low Lead) and banner towing considerably increases the fuel burn along with a HUGE BANNER adding drag to the airplane.
So, yes, to respond to coments above: Political activists should be required to travel in solar powerd cars. They should recycle every thing they can. Every aspect of their lives should be 'green'. Meerly talking about how to save the environment and not providing living proof won't help. In fact...these people should figure out what the Holocene is. The earth naturally goes through heating and cooling trends. I'm not saying that buring fossil fuels is not responsible, but its not purely to blame. Also, if we as America are going to be accused of global warming, the city of Kyoto needs to get with its OWN treaty and lower its emissions by 15% in the next 2 years. Don't believe me? Look it up...

Let's all ignore the environment. Let's all honestly say that we do not give a damn. An inconvenient truth is nothing more that a political scam. We really don't care about this world because we believe that the end is coming anyway, that's what we hear from our leaders and we listen only to them as long as they do not criticize our life habits.
Lets all denegrate people we don't agree with and who only get in our way of life, let's call them political hacks and tree huggers. Who cares what they say, they're not Aggies anyway, they're the complete opposite of the quintessential Aggie, all tree hugging and radical and stuff. The environment is such a burden anyway. Honestly, which Aggie in his right mind really cares about the environment anyway?

the hypocrisy in the entertainment business is beyond belief, and it's not new. i work in the industry. people with money opt out of all sorts of "inconveniences", like commercial airports. whether or not she flew into texas on a private (and i'm sure she did), you can bet your a** she flies in private planes routinely, as do all of her very wealthy friends. it's classic, like hundreds of years old; they (the kings and queens) want you (the commoner) to change your behavior, for this reason or that reason. but change their behavior? oh, you simply can't be serious!....

The private jet issue is a serious one if you are worried about CO2 emissions. I used the Terrapass website to calculate that my Chevy Suburban emits 13,812 lbs of CO2 per year.
At 8785 lbs/hour, a Gulfstream jet puts out more CO2 in two HOURS of flight than my Suburban does in a year. A smaller jet will need to fly about 4 hours to exceed my SUV's annual carbon output. Ms David had a biodeisel-fueled bus available to her for the 3 hour ride from Dallas to College Station. I made that drive many times to go to football games at SMU and TCU; it's not a strain. Perhaps she couldn't stand the thought of having such a closeup view of Flyover Country, or maybe it was just a scheduling problem, but either way, her personal actions lead me to believe that she isn't serious about her cause.

It amazes me that people like "Ed" don't seem to get it. It's not that people (Aggies or anyone else) don't care about the environment. I think that you'd find that most people do. It's the fact that we don't appreciate people telling us how to live our lives when they won't even live it themselves. If Sheryl Crow wants to use one piece of toilet paper to wipe, more power to her. At least she's living what she's preaching. If you want to do the same thing, go for it. When these environmental "leaders" quit building 25000 sq ft houses, quit using enough electricity in one month to power the average home for a year, and flying around on private jets, then maybe I'll take them seriously. Of course, since neither Al Gore, nor Sheryl Crow, nor Laurie David are scientists, please forgive me if I'm skeptical of anything that they have to say anyway.

Sadly, this is the same type of alarmist that touted the coming of a new ice age in the early 1970's, the CFC issue with Food Service Styrofoam in the early 1990's and the Ozone depletion in the 1990's. Now the Global Warming issue is going to save the Democratic Party. The US Government had already stopped CFC emittance in the production of Food Service Styrofoam in 1988 legislation. The Ozone has closed back up several times over the past decade. Paper hot cups have a plastic liner that must be removed before they can biodegrade. Paper needs air, sunlight and water to break down and if your trash is going into a landfill, it's not going to get 2 out of the 3 things needed.

Yes, these hypocrites want us to creep about on the ground like moles, using as little energy as possible, while they jet to and fro, to and from massive, energy-consuming households, berating those (like myself) who dare to want to use toilet paper and hot water. I see it clear as day. (P.S. I turn out the light in any room in my little house every time I leave it. And I grow my own vegetables organically. I wonder what more I can do? Not that it will matter--what they really want in the end is more of my money in the form of taxes. God help me.)

Mr. Savard must be under the impression that jets turn off their engines at high altitudes therefore the contrails left behind couldn't possibly contain any emissions

Yes, Gary, I agree -
Mr. Savard, during the take-off and landing phases of flight...an aircraft is not at 'cruising altitude', which is about 30,000ft for most jets. Jets do not operate at 100% thrust at cruise, but during landing and take-off, any person can see that there is engine exhaust. It is yellow to brownish in color, and is called jetwash. The contrails you see when a jet is at crusing altitude its the 800c temperature exhaust gas from the engines. Contrails typically don't occur at lower altitudes (<20,000ft).

In an interview with The Guardian in November of 2006, Ms. David acknowledged that owning two homes on opposite sides of the country and flying in a private jet several times per year is at odds with her message to others. In the interview she notes "Yes, I take a private plane on holiday a couple of times a year, and I feel horribly guilty about it. I probably shouldn't do it. But the truth is, I'm not perfect. This is not about perfection. I don't expect anybody else to be perfect either. That's what hurts the environmental movement – holding people to a standard they cannot meet. That just pushes people away."
Actually, Mrs. David, you can meet a standard. Take a regular flight like everyone else, you hypocritical mass polluter snob bitch!

So what's your point? Who cares what their motivation is? If they're working to improve the health of our planet... and by extension, of humanity... I don't really care what secret motives are in their heads. And you shouldn't either. Because that's the mentality of a five year-old. If you're genuinely upset about the pollution caused by her plane, well, that's great. You should contact her about that. But if you're just whining about it as an excuse to not do anything for the planet yourself, that doesn't really help us, does it? Should we let humanity die just to prove a point to those celebrities? I think that's called cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. And in any case, she could be devoting her life to shopping... Or to laying around on the beach. But instead she starts work at 5am every day to give everything she's got to spreading the message about helping our environment. If that's a "political agenda," well, then bring on the darn political agendas. I wish we all had political agendas like that. I hope you get one, too. At least it would be more productive than complaining that the one person who is doing the most to save all of our asses, including yours, isn't doing quite enough. A conservative think tank recently revealed that former Vice President Al Gore, the Oscar-winning global-warming scourge, used $30,000 worth of energy in his suburban Nashville home last year. That's 221,000 kilowatt-hours, 20 times the national average. He also owns multiple SUVs and flies around on private jets, just like his friends in the global-warming movement, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Leonardo DiCaprio, and, of course, Laurie David. No hypocrisy here, say these committed environmentalists. They've bought "carbon offsets," such as paying for trees to be planted in Africa to magically erase the pollution they generate here in the U.S. What a joke. Like adulterous preachers lecturing their flock against sin, Gore and his Hollywood sycophants find it far easier to scold the rest of us for our piggish energy consumption than to put a crimp in their own lavish lifestyles. So spare us the sanctimony, Mr. Gore: He who lives in a massive, electricity-devouring house should not be throwing stones.
