Let other schools use purebreds

As a close friend of the writer, I can promise you there is nothing more she wants than a mutt puppy from the animal shelter; however, because of the erratic schedule college life creates-- odd study hours, weird class times, work schedules, moving a lot-- she told me she is waiting until her life becomes relatively scheduled before adopting. Zach, what is your point?

Regardless of breed, I think the next Rev should be adopted, either from the shelter or from a private rescue group. There are already so many animals out there with no homes. There is no reason to breed more.

To all of you who want to put your mark on Texas A&M, please stop. We've had a Collie for 42 years now having and the Border collie is as much a symbol of Texas A&M as Ol' Sarge or the Block T. Now I realize that many of you current students at Texas A&M have failed to grasp the concept of being a part of something much bigger than yourselves, (something Fish Camp fails to teach anymore), but those of you who are promoting all of this wholesale change to things on campus need to need stop and ask yourselves just who the heck you all are and who the heck gave you all the right to go and change the things that so many of us who came and went before you all have enjoyed? Sure, Revs I & II were mutts, but since then (42 years), we've have enjoyed having Reveille as a Border collie. Heck, while we're at it, why don't we just change our school colors to navy blue and green and make our mascot the fighting troubadours? Why do so many of you current students want to change what so many of us hold sacred? Why? So you can puff your chests out and make your claim to fame as having led the march for the "wholesale re-branding" of Texas A&M? If that's the case, then you've missed the point of being an Aggie and that simply "is being a part of something much bigger than that of yourself." Take a step back and enjoy what so many of us have enjoyed. Quit trying to "mess-up" what makes Texas A&M so unique and great.

In case you missed it, the Block T is about all but gone, Just take a walk around campus or catch a Basketball game....
I will agree with other posters in that the next Rev VIII needs to be able to behave(this coming from someone who was bitten, albeit very mildly, by VII).

Hey, F2 Foxes....
If a "border collie" was our mascot, she would have been much smarter than Rev VII.
If A&M's mascot is so important, why do you not even know the correct breed???
SERIOUSLY! AMAZING!

A lot of people are assuming that a dog adopted from the shelter or a rescue dog is going to automatically be well behaved. That may or may not be the case. It really comes down to the training of the dog AND the handlers.
And there will be dogs that will be be fussy and agitated by the wonderful loudness of the Fighting Texas Aggie Band. No amount of training will likely overcome some dogs' fear of crowds and the sounds that make Kyle Field magical.
Having a collie has been more of a tradition than using a mixed breed. A&M should stick with a collie. But we should spend some time finding a suitable collie. I don't know if all of the Reveilles have come from the same blood line. If they have, maybe it is time to change bloodlines. I don't know what age the pups are when they are brought in but perhaps this should be delayed until the dog is a year old after extensive testing and training for noise tolerance. In training hunting dogs we call it determining if the dog is gun shy.
The next Reveille should not be a three month old puppy that is selected by its markings or colors and then thrust into the role and responsibilities and environment. The next Reveille should be thoroughly evaluated, trained and given every opportunity to succeed and have a job it enjoys. This can be for either a rescue collie or a collie purchased or donated.

As someone who has adopted many dogs from shelters, I hope A&M will consider adoption for Reveille VII's successor.
Please realize that shelters and rescue organizations regularly have purebred animals as well as "mutts" so even if the university wishes to retain the collie as its mascot, there are undoubtedly purebred collies awaiting homes in shelters and/or rescue organizations through no fault of their own. By doing so, A&M would help to broaden awareness of needy animals, could reinforce the message that pets are not disposable, and would gain the grateful devotion of a helpless creature that otherwise would be in jeopardy of its life. For a more self-serving reason, adoption would provide a marvelous public relations opportunity for A&M.
Available animals can be found easily through Petfinder or google searches for rescue organizations. Hopefully the individuals assigned the task of finding her successor (and anyone else considering dog ownership) will consider the benefits of adoption, whatever breed or mix desired.

no... wait... i just found a better idea than my earlier one... lets totally have people represent dog breeds and/or mutts and campaign for two weeks to get that particular breed elected to be the next reveille!!! that way campaign week can keep on keeping on! i know scantron machines will be supported by both huskies and collies, but i don't think mutts support this idea.

It's the Old Ags...Joel. They might s*** themselves if E2 starts training and raising a Mutt. Politics, that's all this is, and nobody's really going to get a mutt for the next Reveille, not because of what any STUDENT says, but because of the Old Ags who as said will soil themselves, and then cease to donate any money to the university.

The American Temperament Test Society tested 824 Collies using a standard Dog Temperament Test....
Some Breeds, By Comparison
Dalmatian 81.8% Passing Rate
Doberman 77.0% Passing Rate
COLLIE 79.4% Passing Rate
Pit Bull Terrier 84.3% Passing Rate
German Shepherd 83.3% Passing Rate
Golden Retriever 84.3% Passing Rate
Labrador Retriever 91.8% Passing Rate
Rottweiler 82.6% Passing Rate
Australian Shepherd 80.5% Passing Rate
Border Colle 80.3% Passing Rate
Also, 805 Mixed Breed Dogs were tested, with a Passing Rate of 85.3%
--------------
My Point? THERE ARE BETTER CHOICES, MUCH BETTER CHOICES OUT THERE THAN A COLLIE FOR A MASCOT!!! COLLIES SCORED SLIGHTLY AHEAD OF DOBERMANS IN TEMPERAMENT TESTS, AND WERE BETTERED BY A HUGE VARIETY OF DOGS!!! FOR THE FULL RESULTS CHECK OUT www.atts.org

I get the feeling that all the proponents of keeping a "pure" bred collie are deep down inside racists. I'll go ahead and assume that those who want to keep the tradition of a collie are conservative as hell, and we all know deep down inside conservatives are racist, sexist homophobes.
C'mon conservatives, not everything has to be so pure and traditional. Some things should, but not a school mascot. Are you so enraptured with tradition and purity that you would forsake a stray mutt that can be just as well behaved as a farm bred multi-thousand dollar dog.

Reveille should be a good will ambassador of Texas A&M. I don't think a good will ambassador is embodied in a biting, barking, misbehaving collie. Find a dog at the local shelter that is in need of a good home and a promising future.
