The evacuees need to respect the people in their host city and stop hoarding gas and groceries. They shouldn't be filling up five or more 5 gallon gas cans. When I go by the gas pumps and there's no gas, I can't get any to go to work. The students can't buy any to go to class. The grocery stores are out of bread and other food. BCS isn't equipped to handle this many extra people for very long. The evacuees need to take the gas they greedily hoarded and go to Dallas or Austin or someplace else better able to handle them. I feel bad for them but they can't stay here indefinitely using all our gas and groceries.

Um, so are you preaching to the choir? Or the "hoards" of folks displaced? Why don't you go make a pretty little sign and stand by a gas station so that you may voice your opinion to the people who you want to leave. Putting your comment here does nothing positvie to accomplish what you want. Or better yet, look into what you can do to help. Maybe give someone 5 bucks to get them an extra gallon of gas, save that unopened bag of chips and drop it to someone in Reed Arena, maybe...now this is crazy, take the shirt off you back and give it to a person who lost everything. I'm sure you have plenty more, I remember the 5.00 tent sales and I stocked up everytime. Hook someone up and give them a nice thought of Aggieland as they leave. You never know, one day....it could be you.

Wow. Your comment really is amazing. I live in Houston and it's a little scary to think that you have 3 options in getting essentials like gas and food - either go without, wait in a really long line, or get lucky and happen upon some. With those options, I considered driving to College Station to get gas. But I also told my friends and family there to pay attention to the situation and not run the risk of running out. I did get lucky and happened upon short lines for gas and I'm thankful.

I'm very fortunate to have had power restored on Monday, but I also considered the possibility of being without for 2-3 weeks. You try eating non-perishable food for that amount of time and you'll reconsider "hoarding" gas for your generator so that you can buy simple things like milk or run a lamp so that you can see at night. Try being hospitable.

I don't think the evacuees plan to stay indefinitely. It may have been inconvenient for you for about a week. I guess my son took some of your food and gas. He left College Station on Thursday to come down and help us because we live in a mandatory evacauation zone. He bought some extra supplies in College Station for us because everything was gone and we were busy preparing our home for a hurricane. He also filled up there before he left. We went to the mainland to stay with friends and we are still there because our home was flooded. Our friends still do not have power along with my parent's home and my brother's home, so yes we do feel like the fuel for the generators is pretty important stuff right now. Actually I feel pretty lucky, the water was in our downstairs and we are working on repairing that but we didn't lose most of our belongings. Many people woke up the day after the storm to find out that they have no home and no jobs. That is a pretty sombering feeling. I know it is hard to have all these extra people in your area, but my son has not complained about any gas lines or any problems with the grocery stores, but he was here for the storm and he knows what we are going through and is grateful that our home is still standing and that he is able to get back to a normal life in College Station.

Great post. Maybe a little too harsh, but the people shooting flack at you fail to realize that our hospitality always gets trampled on during these times of need. The issue isn't really the couple weeks that we have to compete with refugees to get gas and essentials; Its that since hurricanes Rita and Katrina, and sure now Ike, we extend ourselves to accomodate people, who foolishly choose to ignore that they live in terribly inclimate weather zones, and then loose it all and stay here. Its no secret that our crime rate has surged since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. It is sure to spike again when the Ike refugees "leave"

When your power is knocked out and is still not restored for a week, you can comment. When you have to ration gas because the gas stations still dont have power, you can comment. Otherwise, I believe students can handle it on their own with food on campus and taking the bus...just a little sacrifice they could make for their neighbors only 90 miles southeast of them.

Thanks for being understanding & Gig'em.

The bus doesn't take me to all the places I need to go. Plus I don't consider people living 90+ miles from me as neighbors. The people next door? Sure, but not 90+ miles.

Just saying.
