Vegetarianism

posted 7/21/08 @ 4:13 AM CST

Actually, vegetarianism results in less efficiency because grazing animals eat grasses and plant matter which is grown on land unsuitable for agricultural for raising vegetable crops for humans.

Land that is unsuitable for farming is turned over to pasture where cows and sheep may graze.

Besides, Vegetarians are Evil! http://www.VegetariansAreEvil.com

Predictable article when so many people are rising from the burnt offerings on their plates. Not only is animal agriculture a crime against nature and an ancient misguided practice, it IS fitted like hand in glove to the rise in most degenerative diseases.
Profound and ugly poetic justice that as we burn animals bodies for consumption, so to, is our earth beginning to burn. Articles like this only confirm the perversion of attitudes that gave birth to such an unsustainable, violent, cruel system of agriculture that is WAY more about fueling the economic interests of those who are literally make a killing from human and animal diseases, genetic research , research to find "cures" for all our self inflicted diet related illnesses, ADM, Cargill, Monsanto, Smithfield, Tyson, Purdue, and many other industries that capitalize on torturing non-human beings. The cost to our environment and health , moral, spiritual and physical, is incalculable.
Considering ALL living beings as precious, and having an inhrent RIGHT to live their lifespans, challenges the very domination born of te herding mentality that has kept our species at war for ages....
Even Plato had something to say about the consequences of eating animals;

From Plato's Republic ;
And there will be animals of many other kinds, if people eat them?
Certainly.
And there will be much geater need for physicians than ever before?
Much greater.
And the country that was enough for its original inhabitants will be too small now, and not enough?
Quite True.
Then a slice of our neighbors land will be needed by us for pasture and tillage, ad they will want a slice of ours, if they, like ourselves, give themselves up to the UNECCESSARY ACCUMULATION OF WEALTH?
Therefore socrates, we shall go to war, shall we not?
That Gloucon, will be inevitable.....

Welcome to war of the worlds!

Peace begins on our plates!!!!!

The use of animals to supplement our diet is as natural as eating plants. Humans along with many other animals cannot digest tree bark, grass, and other abundant sources of food so relying on animals that can is part of the natural order. Vegetarianism may be an option in a country that is aboundant with food, but many poorer countries do not have that option and meat helps many simply survive.

You call modern agribusiness, born of our herding mentality and practices, "natural order?" I call what is going on in this world chaos and cruelty. Poor countries eating meat from animals that need FOOD themselves makes NO sense. Eating the diet that causes MOST diseases and animal deaths makes NO sense. Veganism is the odlest diet on earth. If humanity adopted a vegan diet, we'd end our biochemical addiction to flesh and dairy(Braking the Food Seduction, Dr. Neal Barnard)end heart disease, end osteoporosis(www.drmcdougall.com) and return to the common thread in all religions, mercy, respect for LIFE, non-violent living. Texas A & M and other ag universities are doing our health and earth NO favor. We need a societal de-briefing.If the military can send troops and heavy machinery around the planet, there is sure a way to get grains and other nurtitious foods to people who need them. Our meat mentality is really getting old.

Let's face it, veggie tailgate parties just aren't the same as the Bevo thing.

I tried it, didn't much like it. The bean sprouts kept falling through the grate and flaring up, setting the lettuce on fire above it. The tomatoes kinda went soft mushy just before they exploded, making a heckuva mess. It smelled pretty bad for a while, especially when the brussel sprouts caught fire. But the weed (is that a vegetable?) was a big hit with the neighbors and doesn't taste too bad if you put enough ketchup on it.

Seriously, though, if it wasn't for the livestock the aggies produce in this country we'd all be barefoot and there would be no cat or dog food. The aggies know how to provide sustenance to the world better than the rest of us, regardless whether it's animal or vegetable. Let's just leave the hunting and gathering to them and enjoy their products. In the meantime, pass the ketchup.

Vegetarianism = malnutrition!

People, you are omnivores! Your bodies are made to digest meat!!!! Granted, you don't have to eat 5 steaks a day, but this vegetarian garbage is being pushed as an excuse to support the false-religion of global warming.

Besides, anyone who tells you that vegetarian is healthy is either a liar, or suffering from the effects of a protein-deficient diet.

Wow are you misinformed! Start at omnivores dilemma and go to the china study
that is the most comprehensive study on nutrition to ever take place

Wow, the meat industry isn't wasting any time spamming these comment boards! :)

OF COURSE vegetarianism is healthier, humane, and more sustainable than a meat-based diet. Kudos to Vineet on a hilarious article well written!

This article is probablyone of the most ignorant pieces i have ever read. You obviously know NOTHING about vegetarianism and hould check your facts beforeyou make a claim. You really should visit a cattle ranh and see what goes on there.

My sister is a vegetarian. She has health problems related to lack of nutrition from not eating meat. The writing's on the wall. Also, the comments about how people who disparage vegetarianism are corporate whores are hilarious. Regardless, this discussion belongs in the living room with a couple of beers, not in the bat.

Biology 111, DJK. Proteins are made up of amino acids. When protein is taken into the body, your body breaks it into it's amino acid components to build whatever specific proteins your body demands at the time. No significant amount of proteins are used in the state in which they were consumed. All animal products do is provide ready-made proteins the animal created through consumption of plant materials*. However, since we break down all incoming proteins anyway, it can be seen as pointless to prefer their intake to that of amino acids found in plants. By eating the plants instead of the animals, it is indeed harder, if not impossible to find an all in one food that will provide us with all of our essential amino acids, yet this problem is easily overcome with basic knowledge of nutrition and careful meal planning. In addition to the health benefits associated with the diet itself, the increase in mealtime choice responsibility can lead to an overall awareness about other aspects of nutrition and lead to what amounts to an overall healthier life.

*Or in today's modern meat industries, the proteins in the meats we eat are from sketchy disease-ridden food sources such as parts of other dead animals, which is far from their natural diet. but I digress.

Vineet, you have written a hilarious article that's only flaw was it wasn't longer.

I enjoy eating animals. I don't need to defend that. If it was legal and socially acceptable to eat humans, I would. I bet they taste great.
