Although, I am no longer on campus and can't personally reach out to the players, I can say in writing that I recognize the drive and determination that is being put forth and i am more than confident that the Aggies will be back in every way. I believe in this team, I beleive in the coaching staff and I believe in this University because we are winners at every level. I am confident that Texas Tech will have there worst day becasue we are bring our best day and this will be the greatest upset of the weekend.

Thank you Coach,
I choose to be optimistic about this team. Certainly, everyone knew we were not going to be going to the National Championship this year (except maybe Miller58). However, there is no excuse not to back these young students in their endeavor to excel on the gridiron and achieve their Degrees from Texas A&M University. We, as an Aggie Family, may not be able to boast about our prowess athletically this fall, but damnit we're still Aggies and graduating from this University means a hell of a lot more intrinsically than claiming scoreboard on internet forums.
Though I am optimistic that under the guidance of Coach Sherman, we will be able to make such claims in the near future...
Gig'em and God Bless,
Mike

Coach Sherman, when you came back to Texas A&M just months ago, you made a personal commitment to reintegrate the players and the pride of our football program into the student body and pride of Texas A&M. You have demonstrated that since day one and I personally thank you. You possess the leadership and character that will continue to positively influence our coaching staff and players. That is what I believe will fuel their own personal motivation to believe in you and to persevere. I appreciate you for all you stand for and for what I know you, the coaches and the players will most certainly accomplish together with the committed support of the Aggie family.

Wait, wait, wait. 5 years of mediocracy? Since WHEN did a very likely 2-10 get lumped into a "mediocre" category?
That's in a completely different column all its own, and the title is vulgar enough to comlpetely leave off this website.
But then, this is the Batt's website and all of three people will read this.

My freshman year, 1972, we had a brand new coach named Emory Bellard. That first year was tough and we did not get to throw the Yell Leaders in the Fish Pond very often since the football team went 3-8. The football team and coaches started jelling in '73 and we went 5-6. I was honored by the student body to serve as a Yell Leader in 1974 and we got wet a few times going 8-3. The Fish Pond was being renovated that year and we were thrown into the fountain at the MSC which was way too shallow to land in from atop a rowdy bunch of fish. Man what a year we had in 1975 going 10-0 our first ten games and whupping Earl Campbell and the teasips. My fondest memory was getting a ride out of Kyle on the shoulders of those proud fish Jones and getting thrown into the real Fish Pond that day. Yeah we stumped our toe at Arkansas but my point is you can't make memorable seasons in a matter of months. I am delighted to have Coach Sherman in charge...I am thrilled. If he needs a volunteer for anything I'll be down there for em all. Yeah the outcome of some of the games have hurt me this year but I know that it does not hurt an old Yell Leader near as much as it hurts those kids and coaches working their butts off to turn it around today. I will have the honor to join 155 other ole Yell Leaders on Kyle Field tomorrow to start the game. Sherm, if you need me and the boys to hang around and help let us know. Wouldn't it be great if 156 ole Yell Leaders could help the proud fish Jones tote the Yell Leaders off the field after beating the "everlivin, everlastin, Maroon & White, Fightin Texas Aggie Band, Coach Emory Bellard, Coach Mike Sherman HELLLL outta TexasTech!"....as Rock the Good Ag would say. BTW at our 30th Class Reunion, the Class of '76 named Coach Emory Bellard an honorary member of our class.

I agree with the optimism and the comment regarding Miller58. Since when have Aggies turned against Aggies. "We are the Aggies, the Aggies are WE" is what I remember from my days as an undergrad at Texas A&M.
I don't ever recall a coach being candid enough to send a letter to the student body since the R.C. Slocum era, and for that I respect Coach Sherman even more. I like the fact that Coach Sherman is teaching these players that accountability stretches a lot farther than just the football field, so for Coach to suspend both Bennett and Goodson for not fulfilling their obligations in the classroom is a good sign of things to come.
There's no question that this season has been difficult and hard to endure, but Franchione was allowed a lot more time as the "savior" of our program before negative criticisms were cast and we all know how well that ended. I think Coach Sherman deserves the chance to implement his philosophies and programs to repair the extensive damage that exists in our football program. Most things worth valuing will take time to repair.

I love Aggie football and cannot imagine the fall without it - even when they are losing. What is great about this University is the support and tradition that goes along with this great sport. We have a coach that cares, we have players who are working hard, and even if we do not win another game this season, it is still Aggie Football, we are still Aggies, and the support we give the team this season should be no less than the support we give them during a winning one. Thank you, Coach Sherman, for your optimism and accountability; the wins will come, sometimes it just takes longer than any of us, coaches and players included, would like. Patience is a virtue well worth acqiring. Coach Sherman, so many can learn from your example in a society that shrinks back from taking responsibility and looks for who to blame. You and the players are setting a higher standard and that in and of itself tells us that things are on the right track. Keep on working Ags - We are behind you! Gig'em!

Last week at the A&M vs. KSU game, I watched in amazement as the maroon clad student body kept filing out of the stadium in the second half until finally there were more Corps of Cadets members remaining than the other students on all three East-side decks combined. There was a time when you would only see that sort of thing at the "other" schools, because Aggies stood by their team no matter what. When we won, the vast majority of the students went to the YMCA and held a Yell Practice and dunked the Yell Leaders in the Fish Pond. When we were "outscored" (we never lost), we remained in the stadium and held a Yell Practice to encourage the team for the next game. It appears that the vast majority of our students now don't know about that tradition or don't care. This University consists of many fine traditions. This is one of them. I challenge you to stay to the very end, no matter what the score is. These athletes are doing the best they can. They deserve our support in good times and bad. Do you really think that they intentionally try to get "outscored?" No! It's tough out there. Coach Sherman will bring this program back up, no doubt. In the meantime, we have to stay the course and support our teams, rain or shine. Gig 'em Aggies!!!!! Beat the Hell Outta Texas Tech!!!!!!

Hats off to the likes of those like Micheal here who understand what this great institution is all about. I take pride in this university and it's traditions, especially the 12th man. Regardless of us having a successful football season or not, I always hate to see my fellow ags giving up on the team by clearing the stands before the clock has ended. Though I'm not always proud of the outcome of the games, I'm always proud of my aggie family and will continue to show my support by honoring the tradition of the 12th man. GIG'em!!

Jason, you need to get your numbers correct. There are many times three in our office that read the Batt today. The team may not be winning but I have yet to see lack of effort. Listen to Coach Sherman - he has his priorities in place but I don't think you do. Just think, all the sips and techies have to brag about is football and you are going to Texas A&M, what a privilege.
Claud has it right, the maroon clad students left early while the real Aggies stay - win or lose.

Back in the 80's Coach Sherril was interviewed after we had been outscored by one of the SMU Teams that later earned the Death Penalty. The Media was giving Coach Sherril a hard time when he said: "Everybody better get their licks in on this Team right now, because I am watching them develop and they are going to be awesome!!" Shortly thereafter, Jackie Sherril Teams were running all over the Conference.
I fully expect the same to happen now, Coach. You run our program your way and you keep those young men on the line. Let me be the first to congradulate all of you on the BIG UPSET, whenever it happens this season.

Coach and Team,
It is in our darkest and toughest hours that we need the most faith. It is dark and it is tough....but it's time to RISE UP. Accept where we are, recognize it and feel it. It is only then when you can decide to look adversity in the face and beat it down. Make the decision right now to change mediocrity and leave it behind. Focus on where you want to be and the rest will follow...

Coach,
I am willing to give you a chance. I know that you have a full plate and I hope my fellow Ags will cut you some slack. One thing my 5 years at Aggieland taught me was not to give up. That philosophy helped me through Graduate School and complete my masters even though it seemed like I would never finish. One thing current and recent Aggies need to remember is if the Old Army Aggies had given up and turned on one another more than 100 years ago when the school was threatened with closure and merging into t.u., Texas A&M would not even exist and they would not even have the diploma they have hanging on the wall.
As I type this post right now at work, I am hearing on the sports radio in Memphis the crucifixion of Phil Fulmer in Knoxville, and Tommy Tuberville on the Plains at Auburn. Their fans are turning on them and they have had their jobs for 10 or more years.
I was there when we did not give a rats behind about basketball and they had to beg us to go to those games under Coach Barone. We did not care because we considered ourselves as a football school and basketball was a distraction until baseball season.
For football we need to remember Rome was not built in a day. Even Tom Landry had to work a few years to build a winner and yes, they tried to fire him early, but the ownership gave him more time and produced winners.
I am hoping we as a fanbase do not act like some other school fans and we uphold the behavior that I was taught and passed on to the classes that followed me.

Good piece, Coach!
I remember my first few days at A&M in the fall of '80. I walked on campus rip raring and ready for anything. Zoiks!!! I found out in a hurry it was going to be a lot tougher than I thought. For four long years (I thought they would never end) I hunkered down, found out what I had to work with and made every resource count. And then I made it, but mostly because I had a family behind me!
I have every confidence you will be able to do the same, now that you know what you have to work with. Now hunker down, Coach! We're behind you.

I played football for the Ags, from '95 to '99. Our problem is no longer coaching (although last year I could not say that). Our problem now is that we do not have quality OVERALL across the team. Sure, we have a few talented individuals, however across the board our cupboards are very thin in terms of quality players an experience/depth at positions. This is a direct function of recruiting downslides as the RC Slocum era came to an end, and how it gradually got worse and worse every year under Franchione. Sherman has some tools to work with, but not many....especially in the trenches and on the defensive side of the ball. Want proof? Find our top two receivers....they are a freshman, and last year's #3 quarterback....now translate that across the entire team. We have a long road ahead, and it starts with getting recruits, which we haven't done in years. It also starts with getting familiarity with a pro-style system, which is more detailed than any of you will ever know, so you can imagine how tough it is to learn for the individual players.
Believe me, no matter good coaches are with X's and O's, they can't get it done without quality Johnny's and Joe's....
And don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about....I would bet that I'm the only one posting response with any real-life NCAA football experience.
If this team and coaching staff will work their butts off now, they will be able to kick other's later. I believe Sherman has the mind-set to enforce the work ethic. Now we need to see if he can attract the talent.
Trust me, with our current overall talent level, this is not going to be an overnight change.
I'm behind 'em.....Gig Em.

It's refreshing to see a lack of the deadly poisonous cynicism I see so much on the boards of late.
This is the kind of attitude that Ags used to have about Ags. This is the Aggieland I know and love.
Very refreshing, keep it up ladies and gentlemen.

Good bull! Thanks for the letter Coach Sherman. I have to admit it is very hard to watch the Aggies this year, both literally and figuratively, for those of us away from Texas. When I watch the Aggies lose, my entire weekend is ruined and I usually go to bed early, without dinner. I am so glad to hear coach Sherman say he expects the Ags to be a top-10 team every year. I couldn't agree more. But I still can't figure out how we can get pushed around by Arkansas St and Army (we were lucky to win against the cadets, and they dominated both lines). How does that happen? We are at the bottom of the Big-12. That should never happen considering we have the #1 football environment in the world. Imagine what Kyle Field would be like if we were in the top-10 and the Wrecking Crew came back. Too bad we will get demolished by Taco Tech 93-0. The thought makes me sick. Please help Coach Sherman. I appreciate the values you are instilling in the team but you will be held accountable to one of the greatest Aggie values- excellence with integrity. That means winning...and destroying all teams that enter Kyle Field that are not National Championship contenders. Yes, you should get at least as many years as Coach Fran, unless you continue to lose non-conference home openers. I will say I made a special trip to the Promised Land this year to see the Miami game...yes I stayed to the bitter end, despite the fact we were done by mid-3rd qtr and I hate all Florida teams even more than tu and taco tech. Well, maybe not taco tech. Realize this post is more stream of consciousness than coherent thought, but Coach Sherman inspired me to write. God Bless Texas A&M!

Have faith, Ags! The team has improved considerably as the season has progressed, and with Coach Sherman at the helm, I bet we pull off at least one upset this year. Tech seems to have our number even when we're good(dating all the way back to some of the great Slocum teams of the 90s), so I'm not expecting a miracle today, but won't it be awesome to beat the hell outta t.u. three years in a row? Believe it!

I appreciated Sherman's direct letter about the terrible play of our team, and the first half of the Tech game made me think that we finally had a team that was as fired up as the fans - a team that finally had gotten it's act together. I didn't know Sherman was going to quit on us with 5 minutes left. Sorry Coach, you lost your new found respect by punting the ball away on 4th and long with 5 minutes left and the Aggies down by 11. I was confused 3 minutes later when you started burning timeouts while Tech was deep in our own territory and about to score again. Did you decide that having only 2 minutes left would be better than 5 to score twice? I paid 80 bucks and got sunburned to watch you give up on us with time left ... if Texas A&M expects me to keep paying to come see my team perform, then I'd LOVE it if the coach getting paid 7 digits didn't decide that the game was over with time left...

I am very thankful that Coach Sherman made the effort to communicate with the student body. I am proud of the Ag's no matter what, win or lose. However my bigest problem is the caching staff not utilizing the appropriate players during the game. We have a line-up that when used in the right combinations, could out-score most opponents. I fully understand that we are using a new offense that is founded around NFL plays, but when we have playmakers such as Lane, it is hard to understand why they are not used to "punch-in" the ball. I will always support our aggies play-by-play, but would like to see more of the appropriate talent on the field when they are needed.
