I guess we can blame the terrible editing on not having a journalism department anymore, but I'm pretty sure everyone on the Batt staff is an Aggie (and should be able to read/write English) and therefore should know that it's the Corps not the Corp.

"Standing in Stone", while the statue clearly appears to be made out of metal.

And yet the base on which it is standing clearly appears to be made from stone.

I'm a great, great, nephew of James Vernon "Pinky" Wilson residing with my family in the Philadelphia, PA area. As I child I used to visit my uncle Vernon's ranch and found him to be one of the finer gentlemen I've ever known. His pale skinned "pink" face from which he earned his nickname was always jovial and kind reflecting his keen sense of humor. Even as an 8 year old I remember his deep affection for everything A&M stood for. It's a thrill to see the University honor my uncle as it's done. My father, Lt.Col. William N. Wilson, son of Vernon's brother Claude Wilson, taught my brother and sisters and me the Aggie War Hymm on the piano when we were planning our summer vacation to Texas to see my grandfather and Uncle Vernon. Therefore it's a tune I've that's always enjoyed and respected.

In my family's travels several years ago I was able to show my children that the Aggie War Hymm is also featured in the Collage Football Hall of Fame in South Bend Indiana cited along with a few of the other school tunes (such at the Notre Dame song) as most notable college fight songs.

We just discovered A&M had honored Vernon as we were conducting some family tree research. While my father passed away 4 years ago his younger brother Douglas Wilson (Vernon's nephew once removed)still resides in Kauai, Hawaii. In the event he hasn't heard about the statue I'll let him know. I'm sure he'll be equally proud.

Since my father's passing we'd lost touch with our Texas relatives. What an honor to get reconnected with the family history and discover this. Thank you.

I just found the web information about Uncle Pinky's statue, having been told about it at church this morning from an Aggie who knows my connection. My mother's mother was Amy Beatrice Wilson, Pinky's sister, so that make you and me third cousins, I think. I remember (sort of) seeing Claude and Esther, and Claudia (their granddaughter?) when I was 12 and we visited my mother's brother Lloyd in California. We saw them in Lloyd's beautiful backyard, and I have a picture of it. We used to live outside Burnet, Tx. and Pinky lived there for a number of years before his death. I got to hear him tell lots of stories, and once spent an afternoon listening to Pinky and Hulin trying to top one another with tales. The common phrase was, " you think that's something, listen to this." It was great.
Email me back at ljr4428@yahoo. Long lost cousin due to A& M! linda ross
