Despite an apparent decision last week to close the organization indefinitely, A&M's Women and Gender Equity Resource Center (WGERC) will remain open.

Interim Executive Vice President and Provost Jerry Strawser said in a memo that he accepts the recommendations of the WGERC committee, which formed in the spring to investigate the effectiveness of the center. In July, the committee recommended that the center be split into two centers, one for women's resources and one focusing on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.

Employees of the center had planned a farewell party to take place Friday and a large group of students planned a protest and petition signing for Thursday.

Today, Strawser sent an internal memo that the center will remain open and that the center will move from the administration of Dean of Faculties Karen Watson to Vice President of Student Affairs Dean Bresciani.

This was a terrible decision. Please at least allow students to decide if they want their dollars going to support this center.

I'm in favor of my student fees supporting both centers. The WGERC, under any name or incarnation, provides a valuable service to the university. Every effort should be made to help ALL Aggies feel welcome at this university. (Continued…)

Agreed Pamela, Progress is always terrible. There's nothing worse than fostering a tolerant and respectful atmosphere for everyone.

If I understand correctly, there will be one center for women, and one center for LGBT students? What about the campus population of heterosexual male students? Where can they go for help?

Once upon a time WGERC was seperated into the Women's Resource Center and LGBT then it was combined into one center for all and relocated. This center provides students with a lot of information and a place to go for questions. (Continued…)

What is it with you women? You boast about how tough, capable, and intelligent you are but you need a "center" for you to be able to manage? What a joke. (Continued…)

Dear Pamela,
Please explain why keeping this center open for women who have been through abusive relationships (erego...rape, mistreatment,etc...) is such a terrible thing? I do not mean to sound condescending but this center is a very valuable asset to this univeristy and it's commitment to welcome ALL Aggies. (Continued…)
