Murano pushes Vision 2020 in speech to Student Senate

"No leader, no president, no dean, no department head can do things on their own - it takes the whole University community," Murano said.
Vision 2020, the initiative created by A&M President Ray Bowen in 1997, calls for the University to become one of the top public institutions in the nation by 2020. To accomplish that goal, input from undergraduates needs to be taken more seriously, Murano said. Though Gates realized how powerful Vision 2020 was, and he did a great job implementing his goals, she said, the University hasn't done a good job with his aim to improve the undergraduate experience.
"Even though he commissioned [the undergraduate experience report], I don't think it has been communicated well enough," Murano said. "Surely we haven't gone about implementing it with your participation."
The Student Senate will be instrumental in getting student feedback, and Murano said she will be working closely with it.
"I ask all of you, as you get together with organizations within your colleges, as Student Senate or in whatever capacity that you interact with other students, that you think about what it is - from your perspective - we need to do to make this place better," Murano told the Senate.
Murano relayed to the Student Senate conversations she had with the Faculty Senate, which included recommendations for creating incentives and rewards for teaching at A&M, engaging with the faculty and students and generating a better atmosphere for governing the University. To that end, Murano said, she's doing a little bit of rearranging of the school's administrative positions.
