According to Science Daily, Americans eat out approximately 5 times a week. Given the “on-the-go” lifestyle of a college student combined with poor culinary skills, it makes sense that we eat out more than the average American.
But what is this doing to our diet? From bottomless chips and salsa to fried chicken, restaurants in College Station are like hidden fat traps! Or so it may seem…
Call me crazy, but I think you can eat out AND stick to a healthy diet. Here’s easy ways to cut calories and order more than just water.
Do your research. Most chain restaurants post their nutritional information online. So before you go, take a look at the menu and find a low calorie option. Sometimes you’ll be surprised by what you find out! For instance, you may be trying to order light by getting the quesadilla explosion salad from Chili’s, but that item has over 2,000 calories!
Get a smart phone app! There are tons of apps online that do the research for you. Personally, I use “My Fitness Pal”. It’s free, and I can search for any food item I want! But there are tons out there, and they all help you stay on track when on the go.
No cheese, please! By leaving out cheese, you are cutting at least 100 calories from your meal.
Get your dressing on the side. By ordering the dressing for your salad on the side, you are in control of how much you are eating. A lot of salad dressings ruin what would have been a healthy choice, so just use a small amount!
Grilled, not fried. No matter what it is, if you are asked grilled or fried, always chose grilled. It will save you tons of calories and fat!
Ask for a sub. If you are given an unhealthy side (rice, fries, potatoes, chips), you can usually ask for fruit or veggies instead. This saves me big time when I’m eating Chinese food, I just ask for double vegetables!
