YouTube has given aspiring musicians, for better or worse, the chance to share their music with the world. While some popular YouTube musicians are extremely overrated and too young to be singing about love, many had to earn their Internet popularity by creating unique and entertaining music.
Four Score and 8 Miles ago...
Nicepeter (Peter Shukoff) is one of those musicians. Nicepeter is the creator of the popular video/song seriesEpic Rap Battle of History. The Epic Rap Battles of History, as the name would imply, pit two historical (and occasionally fictional) figures against each other in a rap battle of extreme epicocity.
Peter and his guest for the episode will dress in full costume, assume these historical roles, and film a pre-scripted Rap Battle. This results in a clever battle of theoretical insults between two famous figures. Some of the show's match-ups includes Abe Lincoln vs Chuck Norris,Einstein vs. Steven Hawking, and Dr. Seuss vs. Shakespeare. The show's succeeds with its clever writing, edgy jokes, and hysterical portrayal of historical and fictional figures.
It's Bo, Yo!
Bo Burnham, a popular comedian and singer/songwriter, started his comedy career by posting songs on his YouTube channel. Bo's clever writing, sense of humor, and willingness to sing about controversial subject matter quickly escalated him to Internet fame. Bo, through intelligent use of satire, examines cultural issues and social hang-ups. His songs poke fun at subjects like rap music, other comedians,American society, and even love.
Omelette Du Fromage
Popular YouTube musicians often posses an exceptional mastery of very specific musical styles and techniques. French artist Eklipsgained YouTube popularity with his mastery of beat-boxing and voice imitation. Though he lives in Paris, Eklips listens to more American hip hop than a gang member.
His vast knowledge of American Hip Hop allows him to emulate the vocal style and beats of many American Hip Hop artistsusing only his voice. Eklips combines the work of American rappers into his own style in the way that DJs produce mash-ups. Eklips creates music that is familiar to the listener, yet uniquely his own.
Who'd I miss?
I would like to continue this feature in future blogs, but I will need your help to do so. Who is your personal favorite musician on YouTube? Do you know of any songs or artists that deserve to be in this blog? Let me know in the comments so that I can include them in future entries.
Sam Nealis sexy and he knows it. He also runs The Battalion music blog and is an Ag. Comm. And Journalism major. But mostly he's a devilishly handsome man who thinks he's being clever.
