Interview: Jose Arredondo of Defacto Productions

A sit down with the founder of Aggieland’s most influential promotions company

Several years ago, when Aggies wanted to go see a live show, College Station presented us with a sparse selection of virtually identical local bands comprised of corny groups of "hard rockers" that would demand a ridiculously high door charge in exchange for a 30-minute set full of their favorite Country and Alternative Rock anthems. Thankfully, due to the incredibly hard work of local concert promoters, College Station was able to change its ways and now possesses a thriving and diverse music scene.

One of the hardest working and most successful promoters in town is Jose Arredondo, founder of Defacto Productions.

Arredondo, is a senior psychology and telecommunication media studies double major. (Whew!) As you might have guessed, it is no small feat doing all of this while running one of the most well known concert production companies in town. So, out of curiosity, I decided to sit down with the jack of all trades to learn a little bit more about the man and the mission of Defacto Productions.

 

Can you tell us about how and when Defacto Productions got started?

Arredondo: Defacto Productions started with an idea back in 2005 while I was still a junior in high school. I used to play guitar for a couple of local bands on a serious enough level that I started taking it upon myself to book shows, make tours happen and eventually helped both of the bands get signed to labels in 2006, when I was a senior in high school.

Once I arrived in College Station to attend Texas A&M in the fall of 2007, I took a short break to get used to classes and started back up in the summer of 2009. Ever since, we've continued to book concerts for local, independent and up-and-coming artists who need help getting that break and need the exposure.

 

Is there any story behind the name Defacto?

Arredondo: The word comes from the Latin de facto, which is used to describe something that actually exists but isn't officially recognized. So, I took that and realized that in a way up-and-coming artists are sort of de facto in the world of the entertainment industry—there's so many out there.

 

What would you say that the main focus or mission of Defacto Productions is?

Arredondo: We have two sides to the whole of what Defacto Productions is, really. One of the sides is the most visible one, putting on concerts, promoting concerts, artist development, etc. The other side of Defacto Productions is offering production and logistical solutions for charities, non-profits and awareness organizations in conjunction with music events and benefit concerts.

 

I understand that you guys are now working hard at organizing ‘Rock the Republic' this year?

Arredondo: ‘Rock The Republic'is a new project we took on last year as we were brought in to stage-manage the main stage during last year's event. After that we were picked up to completely run the entertainment and logistics of scheduling, booking and talent buying for the festival this year.

The good news is that tickets are now on sale already for $15 for a two-day pass and $10 single-day passes. The schedule will be coming out very soon before the end of the month! We're excited about this year; tickets and schedules can be seen at http://rocktherepublic.com

 

What should a band do to grab the attention of ‘Defacto'?

Arredondo: We like working with as many local and independent musicians and bands as possible. We strive to help and develop the music scene environment in Bryan-College Station and always better live entertainment for fans and bands alike. We take electron press kit (EPK) considerations for working with artists in an artist development capacity (which includes management, booking, touring, public relations, etc.) if they email us their music, websites or ideas/thoughts to epk@defactoproductions.org. Bands can also come say "hi" at a show.
