2011 staff awards

The Battalion staff received several awards for their efforts for Spring 2011 under the leadership of Matthew Woolbright and Fall 2011 under the leadership of Robert Carpenter. The staff was awarded for their work for 2011 in April 2012 at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association awards in Corpus Christi, Texas.

First place awards were given to Josh McKenna for his sports feature photo of Jessica Beard on Feb. 15; Jared Baxter, Robert Carpenter and Adrian O'Hanlon III for single subject presentation design on Nov. 23 of Texas vs AMC Thanksgiving 2011; and Evan Andrews, Josh McKenna and JD Swiger for their photo illustration of the Class of 2011 on May 9.

Second place awards were given to Carpenter, Baxter and O'Hanlon III for their editorial Dec. 2 concerning Mike Sherman's departure from A&M; Joanna Raines, April Baltensperger and Jill Beathard for their news feature April 12 on "Stripper: Student by day, dancer by night;" Javy Cavazos for his page one design Dec. 2 on "'A true man:'" Sherman fired after 6-6 season;" Osa Okundaye on his illustration of Cough Fee on Jan. 2; and Andrews' information graphic on "Prepared to cut" on Oct. 29.

Third place awards were given to Carpenter for his general column Oct. 24 on "Time to give a damn;" Alec Goetz for his critical review Nov. 29 on Twilight; Roger Zhang for his sports action photo on Oct. 24 of the A&M and Oklahoma soccer match; and Goetz and Joe Terrell on their feature page design on Nov. 28 of "Stranger in a strange land."

Honorable mentions were given for feature story "Haunted: Grisly accident, mysterious fie ..." on Oct. 31; sports news "Conference pals" on Sept. 27; sports feature story "Bleeding maroon: Senior wide receiver ..." on Sept. 23; sports action photo "Offensive architect" on Dec. 1; single subject design "Long-term effects of the spill" on Sept. 19; and editorial cartoon "Disaster of charitable waste" on Feb. 2.
