This weekend is Parents' Weekend, a time that includes numerous events aiming to give the students a chance to spend time with parents, and in doing so, allow students to show their gratitude.
"The main goal of Parents' Weekend is to just show parents what Aggieland is like," said John Kirking, a senior finance major and finance chair for the Parents' Weekend Committee.
The weekend is student-planned and funded, with the proceeds going to the following year. Historically, the exact dates have varied along with changes in the official name.
For many however, the level of involvement for Parents' Weekend largely depends on their own involvement on campus.
"I feel like for those who aren't in some sort of organization, Parents' Weekend really doesn't mean as much," said Kelly Bradley, a sophomore English major.
• Parents' Weekend will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday with the Aggie Mom's Club Boutique, followed by the first Midnight Yell lead by the newly elected yell leaders. Coach Dennis Franchione will address fans with the Maroon and White Game, a preview of the upcoming season, and Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, former president of Texas A&M, will be the guest speaker.
• The Bevo Burn barbecue lunch will take place from 11 a.m. through 2 p.m. on Saturday at Duncan Field. The barbecue will feature about 10 professional barbecue teams from around the state who will compete for a variety of awards, which include best ribs, brisket and chili.
• Immediately following the barbecue, the football team will wrap up spring practices with the annual Maroon and White Game at 2 p.m. at Kyle Field.
• Sunday morning will conclude the weekend with a ceremony for handing out the All-University Awards, such as the naming of the new Parents of the Year and a number of other service awards for students.
