Third time's the charm

The No. 1 ranked Aggie women's track and field team will look to three-peat as Big 12 indoor champions on today and Saturday at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.

The No. 4 ranked men's team will try to improve on its fourth place finish in 2008.

"In our sport, cumulative records don't count," said Texas A&M Head Coach Pat Henry. "How many games you win isn't our sport or how many meets you win doesn't have anything to do with our sport. It's what you do at the conference championship, and what you do at the NCAA championship that determines what kind of athlete you are in our sport."

This will be the first time the indoor conference meet is at Texas A&M.

The A&M men lead the conference with their No. 4 ranking and are followed by No. 5 Nebraska, No. 8 Texas, No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 10 Texas Tech, No. 15 Baylor, No. 16 Oklahoma State and No. 23 Missouri.

The top-ranked women lead No. 11 Texas, No. 12 Texas Tech, No. 15 Baylor and No. 24 Nebraska into the event. The women have been ranked No. 1 for every week of the 2009 season.

A&M sophomore Gerald Phiri is the defending Big 12 champion in the 100 meter and 200 meter races and has the school record in the 60 meter dash. Junior Porscha Lucas and sophomore Gaby Mayo will compete in the 60 meter dash and 200 meter dash for the Aggie women. Mayo will also race in the 60-meter hurdles.

Being the 2007 and 2008 indoor champions, the Aggie women will look to make history and become the only team in league history with three consecutive indoor titles.

Preliminaries Preliminary races begin at 11 a.m. today at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
