Texas A&M President Robert M. Gates announced at the annual academic convocation on Friday, Aug. 27, that A&M has broken a seven-year trend of declining minority enrollment by increasing minority enrollment across the board.
According to enrollment data as of Aug. 14, black freshman enrollment increased 39 percent from last year, Hispanic freshman enrollment increased 26 percent and Asian-American enrollment increased 18 percent. Minority graduate student enrollment also increased with a 37 percent increase in African-American graduate students and 24 percent increase in Hispanic graduate students.
Gates said these changes are important to the University, and that the University will continue to make progress. Gates said A&M will consider broadening the University Honors Program into a possible separate honors college, re-evaluating University summer school and looking at alternative tuition plans.
"Together we are making history at Texas A&M in a way that, for most, comes along only once in a career... I venture to say, you will not experience anything quite like this again," Gates said.
