Robert D. McTeer was appointed chancellor of the Texas A&M University System by the Texas A&M Board of Regents in a special telephone meeting Thursday.
McTeer was named the sole finalist for the position on Oct. 13, but he could not be appointed until after a 21-day open period.
McTeer has worked for the Federal Reserve for 36 years, spending the past 14 years as president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.
In addition to appointing McTeer as chancellor, the board appointed U.S. Undersecretary of Agriculture Elsa A. Murano to the joint positions of vice chancellor and dean of agriculture and life sciences.
G. Kemble Bennett, vice chancellor and dean of engineering and chair of the search committee, said this position is among the most complex and important agricultural positions in the education world and that Murano will serve well in the position.
"Through her experience in Washington, D.C., Dr. Murano has gained a global perspective of the role of agriculture today and has communicated a clear vision for taking Texas A&M's program to the next level of excellence," Bennet said.
Murano's appointment is effective Jan. 3, and she will replace Ed Hiler, who is retiring from the position in which he has served since 1992.
Prior to her appointment as undersecretary of agriculture in 2001, Murano was a professor in A&M's Department of Animal Science.
