The Living Wage Coalition of Brazos Valley will invite people from the community to preview a documentary about the living wage issue and listen to speakers from Texas A&M to organize a movement for higher wages for A&M workers.
Delorean St. Clair, the Texas Aggie Democrats representative to the coalition, said the coalition wants people to attend to raise awareness about the living wage issue.
"Increasing the starting wage to $7.77 is a good beginning but it does not help the working poor get out of poverty," Hawkins said. "For that reason, it's not enough and does not apply to enough workers. We want to continue to dialogue with the University to achieve a living wage for all workers."
Nick Anthis, Class of 2005 and who has been associated with the living wage initiative since the fall, said the living wage is an effort to give campus workers the standard of living they deserve.
"As a former student, I think A&M gives its students really great chances to succeed, but it's easy to forget the people that provide the foundation that allows the University to function day-to-day and makes all that possible," Anthis said. "I would say that the living wage is economically sound and could prove beneficial to A&M by increasing worker retention and morale."
The event will be held at the Friends Congregational Church on 2200 Southwood Drive Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m.
