A man was believed to be on campus wielding a gun in the H.R. Bright building Friday afternoon after a 911 call was received by an anonymous caller.

In the Code Maroon that was sent out campus-wide, students were urged to seek shelter and remain there until further notice and avoid the area.

"The call was reportedly made from a campus emergency telephone in the area between the Bright Building and the Chemistry Building," said Sherylon Carroll, associate vice president for communications.

University police officers were dispatched to thoroughly searched the Bright building and other buildings nearby for the gunman.

"It was a hoax. There was no gunman," Carroll said. "University Police reported that the scene was safe and secure at approximately 6:10 p.m."
