The memory of Spencer Patton Squire, 6, who died of a brain aneurysm Aug. 8 lives on through a scholarship created by his grandparents, Patricia Kirksey and Warren Patton, Class of 1956.
Spencer was certain to be an Aggie. His obituary stated that he enjoyed attending Texas A&M games and participating in numerous baseball and soccer camps at A&M.
Spencer's parents, Anna and Patrick Squire, are both former A&M students, Class of 1991.
The Spencer Patton Squire Memorial Scholarship in Education in the College of Education and Human Development is a one-year scholarship granted to incoming freshmen based on financial need.
Jacqueline Siegel, a freshman early childhood and development education major, is the 2008-2009 Spencer Patton Squire Memorial Scholarship recipient.
"I found out I got the scholarship at a dinner party at my professor's house," Siegel said. "I am in a group called Lohman, and at our dinner they announced recipients of scholarships."
Siegel said it is a, $1,200 non-renewable scholarship.
"I have not actually had a chance to meet the family yet," Siegel said. "I recently sent a letter to them thanking them for the scholarship. Hopefully I will get to meet the family at the next football game."
Spencer's legacy will live on through the memorial scholarship and the gift of life. Because Spencer was an organ donor, a 45-year-old woman's life was saved by his liver donation.
A playground was constructed at Boon Elementary in Allen, Texas, in his honor where he attended school.
