The Melrose Apartment complex's office and clubhouse was badly damaged and the flames could be clearly seen over tree tops from nearby residences.

No one was injured in a fire that destroyed an apartment office and clubhouse.

Eleven College Station fire trucks and 32 fire department personnel responded to a fire at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Melrose Apartments on Luther Street, according to a news release. Apartment units were not damaged.

A resident of the complex said the fire was sparked by lightning.

"I saw our community adviser and he informed me that a lightning bolt had hit something on the roof of the clubhouse and it ignited a spark within the attic of the clubhouse," said Justin Goodman, a senior construction science major.

The fire was under control by 3 p.m. and there were no reported injuries and no apartment residents were displaced, Public Information Officer Bart Humphreys said.

By the time the fire was contained, a portion of the office's roof had collapsed and a bulldozer was brought in to demolish a portion of the office and clubhouse adjacent to the tennis courts.

The fire marshal's office was investigating the fire.
