College Station city council unanimously voted to approve funding for cell phone ban signs in school zones. The signs will be paid for by the fund created from revenue gained from red light cameras. The Legislature passed a law making it illegal to use a mobile device while driving in an active school zone, College Station Police Department public information officer Lt. Rodney Sigler said. The law went into effect on Sept. 1, but it is only enforceable if signs have been posted in the school zone. Six states prohibit talking on handheld cell phones while driving, and 18 states have passed legislation banning texting while driving. "We haven't really had a problem with cell phone usage in the school zones," said College Station Police Department Master Officer Rhonda Seaton.
