Sophomore telecommunications media studies major and former Battalion staff writer Matthew Malone was admitted to the College Station Medical Center with serious injuries after being involved in a traffic accident on George Bush East and Kyle streets Friday afternoon, police say.

A University Police Department (UPD) officer had initiated a traffic stop on a 2006 Honda Sedan, but as the officer approached the car, the 15-year-old male driver sped away. A high-speed chase ensued, and the Honda crossed a median, colliding with Malone's 2005 Honda Coupe.

Officials said the driver initially fled because he was unlicensed and had taken his parents car without permission.

UPD placed the 15-year-old driver in custody for evading in a vehicle. The charge became a third degree felony because of Malone's extensive injuries.

Malone's female passenger and the 15-year-old driver received minor injuries.
