The Texas A&M volleyball team was on the edge of getting a much-needed win on Sunday, but the Iowa State Cyclones fought back and won a decisive game five.
Early in the match, Iowa State didn't look like the team that went into No. 21 Missouri and stunned the Tigers three weeks ago. But ISU seized the opportunity presented by 39 Aggie errors.
"I think that (the errors) are part of our learning with our freshman outside hitters and setters," said A&M head coach Laurie Corbelli. "It's half of our team is the outside hitter and the setter and they're freshmen that are really going through the learning process during matches. I see how much they're learning, I see what they're trying to do, but they just aren't going to be very accurate right now."
The Aggies' play was up and down throughout the match, as the Cyclones won for just the third time against A&M in the program's history. ISU's win in Ames earlier this year snapped a 21-match winning streak by the Aggies, and Sunday's win was its first ever in G. Rollie White Coliseum.
"There's a reason (A&M) wins so much here," said ISU head coach Christy Johnson. "I think it's a great crowd and they're loud and aggressive, but they were very respectful. It's an intimidating place to play, but we knew coming in here how tough it would be."
Game three of the match was a bit of a role reversal for the Aggies. Last week against Baylor, A&M gave up a late lead, allowing the Bears to take the momentum and the fourth game.
