About 55,000 Texas A&M and Blinn College students living in Bryan will be affected by the Bryan Planning and Zoning Commission's drafted plan that could limit the number of unrelated adults housed in certain residential zones.
At this point, a few neighborhood associations are pushing hard for the change, citing that some students' lifestyles and behaviors conflict with peace in their neighborhood. This is why students need to be at the forefront of the discussion. If there are any issues that deal with student behavior, the students need to be consulted and warned that their individual behaviors are affecting not only neighbors, but entire neighborhoods and city policies as well.
Additionally, several neighborhood associations have declined to talk to The Battalion regarding the plan and their relationship with student residents. It is irresponsible and unfair to students that these groups, which are pushing for a plan that could affect off- campus student life, are unwilling to address the most widely circulated student publication on campus.
Students should fight for their right to know about how their living situations will be changing. If these organizations are unwilling to talk to the students through student publications, students themselves should join The Battalion in attending Bryan City Council meetings to stay informed.
