I have not read The Battalion since I graduated from A&M last year, but I was appalled when a friend let me know about Mr. Deuterman's article on disrespect in the Student Senate. I know all about professionalism and dress codes. As a Naval Officer, those are two critically important things in the military and they do go hand in hand. Yet, to see someone write a huge editorial piece on shirt tucking in the Student Senate really upset me. It is about time that people in SGA realize that their "glories" are shared only by them and remain at A&M forever. Student Senators are not one ounce better than any other Aggie nor should they act like they are the top crop of students. How dare Mr. Deuterman presume what a true student leader is. If his idea of leadership is a kid only a few years out of high school with a nice suit and a few part-time jobs under their belt then he has a very warped sense of what leadership is all about. How dare he condescendingly look down on others and say that only the best and brightest serve in the student senate. The student leaders at A&M are not the wide-eyed twenty year olds with titles like student senator or elections commissioner or dare I say student body president. The real student leaders at A&M are those that have fought for their country or are on the precipice thereof. Aggies have died during this war and I am sure we will lose more. Those that have served something more than themselves and served their country are the leaders Aggies should aspire to be not a Student Senator. It's time to get your priorities straight.
